  1. Why would they write books to teach sign language if you couldn’t learn it from a book?

You can get videos…we learned and taught our kids a little basic sign from videos.

  2. I learned a lot from books, and I think it’s fine. It will help you get started. Then if you meet anyone else who can sign, you can practice with them, but at least you’ll know the basics. I also rented a dvd for free from my public library called “how to talk to a person who can’t hear.” It was a great starter dvd.

  3. First of all, get a book anyway. It is a building block, and although you won’t be able to ‘read’ every sign the correct way, they usually help.

To get really involved in signing, you could enroll in a community college Sign Language course. Great programs. Also, check out this site: http://commtechlab.msu.edu/sites/aslweb/browser.htm

  4. You need two big things to get immersed in Sign Language.

    1) Introduce vocab, learn signs, through a book, a website, videos, etc.

    2) You need to put all of that together. Learning the grammar, the facial expressions, the speed in the signs in different situations, the use of the space, the pauses. For getting all of this, the best way is to join a Deaf club in your area, or take a course in a Community College. Being around Deaf and practicing is what is going to help to speak and keep a conversation in the language.
