I am learning sign language, but I’m also left-handed so my natural instinct is to do all of the main movement with my left hand. Is that correct? Do you think if I signed to a deaf person they would be able to understand even if it’s backwards?

It doesn’t matter if you are left-handed but you have to have a clear decision of your dominant hand when signing with both hands.
I am a professional sign language interpreter and I am left-handed. Just as with writing, you will find your dominant hand with signing. If it is your left hand, that is fine. That’s how I sign. The important thing is to make sure that you have a dominant hand and stick to it. What becomes confusing is when people switch hands as they sign.
Don’t try to force yourself to sign “righty” because you will end up making more of a mess of things! 🙂
