I’m really interested in learning sign language, and know the alphabet, and some gestures. Like the colors and such, but where could I learn sign language? My school doesn’t have a ASL Club or anything, and on a side note what is the sign for poker?
.
Does anybody know of any good sites where I could learn two handed sign language/?
My great-aunt is coming to visit us and she’s deaf but nobody in my family knows sign language. We don’t want her to feel ignored so we figured we should at least learn the basics. Is it hard to learn and how long should it take? Thanks!

Four-Letter Word Practice for American Sign Language Alphabet (ABC, ASL, fingerspelling)
www.WestwoodASL.com The purpose of this video is to give the viewer practice with reading 4-letter words. The words are fingerspelled using the alphabet (ABC’s) for ASL (American Sign Language). This video is a test sample that I’m working on for my website. I’ll add variations as I tweak them and find the best setting. In the meantime, enjoy. Feel free to post comments. Any ideas for an American Sign Language presentation?
I have to give a 3-5 minute presentation in my ASL class and have no idea what to do. My teacher said no jokes or poems, but we can tell a story, sign lyrics to a song or sign a speech. So far, all I’ve been able to think of is the preamble to The Constitution, the Gettysburg Address and the lyrics to Imagine by John Lennon. If anyone has any other ideas I would love to hear them.

Which is tough to learn – ASL (American Sign Language) or any of Asian Language?
I’m deaf. I’ve had people tell me that learning ASL is way tougher than any other languages in the world.
I think this is untrue. I think learning Asian language is tough because of their phonetics. I’ve tried mastering it and couldn’t do so because their language is so rough on my vocal cords. ASL does not require the use of phonetics or sounding out a word. It is mostly visual and body language to communicate.

Why do hardly any colleges or universities offer ASL as a language, let alone a minor or major?
Im looking around at colleges and hardly any have a sign language program. I don’t get this, since ASLis the most used language in the US after english and spanish, and some colleges have minors in greek. Some places don’t even accept it as a foreign language credit. The only places that have majors or minors are in indiana and kentucky and ohio, and im on the east coast.
Why?

If you teach pre-verbal infants sign language, how well do they make the crossover to speech?
Do they learn speech:
faster- because after already communicating in sign language for some time, they have more confidence that they will be understood- as well- by learning sign language early, the neurons have made more connections which, in turn, enables them to learn at a faster rate?
or slower, because they rely on the sign language, instead of speech, because they know that the signs work and that it may be a control issue with some children over their parents (like, for instance, potty training can be a control issue).
Also, do you have personal experience with this? And what is the best way to assist in the crossover?
Thanks!
