Learn To Sign Now

There are not many things in life that are as cool as being able to talk with someone who can not speak. Are you interested in learning yourself? It is amazing to see several people signing back and forth. Wouldn’t you like to be someone who can talk with your hands? Your options are unlimited.

Without question, there are many different ways you can learn this wonderful skill. You have the option of learning with flash cards, online programs, books, or even learn by practicing with someone who can sign already. I started out by searching for some free websites. If you Google it, you will find a bunch of sites promising you many things. This will cost you some a pretty penny. Unfortunately, I spent several months without finding anything that worked for me.

Next, I purchased several books. Sadly, this did not work for me. After several months of periodically trying different things, I finally discovered videos were the best way. The next challenge was finding the right place to get the videos. It did not take me long. The best video training system for me was Rocket Sign Language.

For me, learning sign language with the video system was surprisingly fast. I have a busy schedule, so my plan was to learn several signs every week. I wanted to master several signs and then move on to the next. I was fortunate because I had recently met two people who were deaf. So after I learned my three or four signs for that week, I would practice with my new friends. I am sure they enjoyed it as much as I did.

There are other video programs out there. I can not evaluate other methods, since I only used Rocket Sign Language. However, this particular video program makes learning a lot of fun. Not only can you see the sign being demonstrated, but you can watch it over and over. Repeating the procedure is the best way for me to learn something new.

You can pick the sign you want to learn. They even have some really fun games you can enjoy. When you need help, you may sign up for your very own virtual professor. This option is available at any time during the day.

You can learn more about the Rocket Sign Language program at Learn Sign Language Free. The program is not free, but has a guarantee. Therefore, you risk nothing if you are not satisfied. To date, I do not know of anyone who has ever requested a refund. If you are serious about wanting to learn sign language, then you have to give this program a try. You will be thrilled you did.

Don’t Buy Car Insurance – Until You Learn the Language

OK, let’s be honest for a moment. How many of us fully understand our car insurance policy? For instance, can you explain the difference between your comprehensive clause and your collision coverage? If not, you are certainly not alone. Most of us just sign on the dotted line and trust our agent to understand the mumbo-jumbo of car insurance speak.

By taking a moment to learn five basic definitions, you can feel more confident when talking with your agent. It’s likely that more confidence will prompt you to ask more questions, and with that added knowledge comes added negotiating power, better coverage, and lower rates. So let’s start translating a few car insurance terms.

1. Liability – Bodily Injury and Property Damage (BI/PD) This coverage provides protection if you are at-fault in an accident that causes injury to people or damage to property. Property damage includes physical damage to other vehicles as well as other property, such as a building, sign, etc. Most states require a minimum limit of BI/PD coverage. Higher limits are usually available and always recommended – it’s wise to consider the worst case scenario. If you are in an at-fault accident and total a very expensive car, yet have low liability limits on your insurance, you’ll be responsible to pay out-of-pocket for the damage.

2. Collision Coverage This coverage pays for damage to your car caused by an at-fault collision. This could be a collision with another vehicle or other property, such as a building or sign. This coverage includes a deductible and may be required by a lender for a financed vehicle. This insurance also applies to hit and runs and uninsured motorist coverage but keep in mind you’ll have to pay your deductible to repair your car in either case.

3. Comprehensive – (Also referred to as Other-Than-Collision or “OTC”) This coverage pays for damage to your car for reasons other than a collision. This includes theft, fire, vandalism, windstorm, etc. This coverage includes a deductible. Collision coverage and Other-Than-Collision coverage are collectively known as “Physical Damage” coverage. Comprehensive coverage may be required by the bank that finances your vehicle.

4. Uninsured Motorist Coverage (UM) In a perfect world, everyone would have high limits of auto insurance and this coverage would be unnecessary. Unfortunately, this is not the case. UM coverage kicks in if you are in an accident with an uninsured driver. Limits are similar to limits of liability and some states require at least a minimum limit of UM.

5. Medical Payments Coverage This coverage pays reasonable medical expenses incurred by you or a passenger(s) in an accident. The limit is per person and is usually a dollar amount (e.g. $5,000). Different states have different specifics on this coverage so talk to an insurance agent in your area. Following an accident, these five coverages work together to get you back to where you were before the accident. Some of the five may be mandatory, depending on where you live. Others, while not required, should be carefully considered since their contribution to your claim may be essential.

OK, now that you have a firm understanding of the basics, you’re ready to go forth and buy car insurance!

You Don’t Have To Be A Complete Victim, Learn Body Language

Did you ever talk to someone and felt like their body was saying something different than what they were actually telling you? Or did you have had problems convincing a person because it could have been that your body was not sending the right message? If this happened to you then you might have came to the conclusion that besides spoken words, our body also has its own language and that grasping the meaning of some key body language can be beneficial.

Truly, when people talk, their body may also be communicating a message. If this non verbal language is picked up by you or the person you are talking to, it has the potential of asserting the point being made as it could also lower the pertinence of the vocal message sent. This being, what should you do to put the willed meaning on these body gestures or interpret others’ gestures?

In fact, before trying to decrypt the non verbal communication someone is making, be attentive to the context in which the body language is taking place. Effectively, if a person seems to present closed body language such as crossed arms, be sure that the move is not occurring because the person wants to protect himself/herself from the cold for instance. Thus, one should keep in mind that the environment can play a role on gestures people display.

Now you might be thinking: “Ok, so what are some examples of body language?” First of all, among the different types of non verbal communications some are seen as being defensive in the sense that the person is trying to protect himself/herself from a perceived danger, which of course is not necessarily physical. In this case, the person could be crossing his/her legs, looking from side to side as if to find a way to flee. Another element that can help determine defensive body language can be found in the person’s chin being held down. Someone displaying a defensive body language can also put an obstacle between him/her and the perceived danger. A book placed between the danger and the person can serve the purpose of creating an obstacle.

A Second type of body language is one termed as relaxed. In order to appear to be in a relaxed mode you could look at the person you are conversing with, loosen your muscles to avoid appearing tensed. Smiling can also be a way to show calmness. However when a smile is fake, it could be easily detected by the fact that your eyes might not be smiling while your mouth is. Furthermore, the breathing should be slow and regular. Finally, a sign of tranquility can be achieved by settling the body on one side.

Finally, while many of us disregard what messages we are sending non verbally, learning and reading body language can be advantageous not only for our understanding of people around us but also to influence others’ interpretation of our own gestures. Thus, avoiding presenting defensive body language and appearing relaxed can make the message being communicated more positive. Nonetheless, when reading someone’s non verbal language we should not forget to contextualize what we are seeing in order to avoid misinterpretations.
