Is sign language considered to be a second language?

I am teaching myself sign language and I think I am going to end up going to Rock Valley Community College and then I am going to go to a college for a criminal justice and human services masters degree. But.. I don’t know if sign language is considered as a second language to community colleges or colleges like Columbia or Upper Iowa Unniversity. Can any one help me out here??
I already planned on taking courses once I get into my community college if they have it there.

Baby Sign Language, a Fun and Rewarding Home Business

Does the idea of working with parents and babies interest you? What if you could start a home business offering a very rewarding service to families?

Parents are jumping at the chance to teach their hearing babies how to communicate using Sign Language. Babies as young as 6 months old are telling their parents they hurt and need medicine. Think about how much less frustrating a parent’s life would be if their baby could tell them what is wrong rather than just cry.

Due to recent media coverage, parents, and daycare providers want to teach their babies and toddlers baby sign-language. This has created a demand for baby sign language instructors.

There is no experience or educational background necessary to teach baby sign language. All you need is a love of babies and the desire to teach parents how to better communicate with their baby.

Baby Sign Language Increases Trust and Decreases Frustration

Babies have a lot to say, but it takes many months before they develop the skills needed to form words. When a hearing baby learns sign language, he gains the ability to communicate before he can speak. One mom of a signing baby confirms that baby’s first sign can be just as exciting as a first word.

Researchers tell us that the early years are a prime time for acquiring language skills. It has been proven that baby sign language does not delay speech. In fact, hearing children who learn sign language have been shown to have a larger vocabulary when they do begin to speak and they have scored as much as 12 points higher on IQ tests in later years.

Most importantly, baby sign language increases trust between parent and child and decreases frustration for young children who cannot yet communicate with speech. Even older children love the “secret” communication that they can have with their parents in even the quietest of places.

It has also been reported that older siblings who sign with their baby brother or sister benefit from the early communication through reduced sibling rivalry.

Teaching Baby Sign Language

When babies wave bye-bye, they are ready to begin baby sign language. Be sure to speak each word as you sign it. Then show the baby how to do the hand sign. You can also use BABY SIGN LANGUAGE cards to teach new signs. These cards are bright, colorful, and durable. They are sure to capture a baby’s attention!

There is no doubt that baby sign language helps cement the parent-child bond with early communication skills that will last a lifetime. What a fulfilling way for a mom or anyone who loves babies to earn money at home!

Kindersigns.com is the most complete American Sign Language for Babies program available to day. Not only will you learn how to communicate with your child, but you will also have everything you need to turn your new sign language skills into a thriving Business Opportunity!

New Uses for Sign Language?

Almost forty years ago, when my daughter was less than nine-months-old, I watched her wave her hands about in intricate patterns, turning them this way and that, and wriggling her fingers back and forth. Her vocal activity then consisted of crying, laughing, and mono-syllables; la-la, ma-ma, She had not figured out how to make most of the sounds, but she could definitely move her hands.

I wondered then whether infants wouldn’t learn sign language more easily than speech. Part of that was because I was alone all day with my baby, and didn’t have anyone else to talk with most of the time. So, the notion that an infant might be able to communicate ideas with her hands was exciting. It is only within the last few months that I have seen articles in the leading parenting magazines, which state that you can teach a nine-month-old infant to express her needs with her hands; such as “I’m hungry,” and “I’m poopy,” instead of merely crying. Teaching a child these things could also contribute to their emotional maturity, as the child would learn early on that she does not always need to scream and cry to get her needs met.

Unfortunately, I did not know anyone at that time who could have helped me learn sign language so that I could teach some to my daughter. Nor could I find any studies that might prove it could be easier for infants to learn sign language than speech. Do the children of deaf people learn how to communicate with their hands earlier than most children learn how to talk? No one I knew at the time could say. And what about those Indian tribes that primarily use sign language to communicate; do their children learn to do this earlier than children from conventional society learn to speak?
Vocal speech depends on the development of three centers within the brain; Broca’s area for producing speech, Wernicke’s area for understanding what we hear, and the angular gyrus where we organize our thoughts. We have seen the unfortunate results, when any these areas are damaged through accident or stroke and the victim needs to relearn how to talk. But, does sign language go through these same speech centers? Perhaps someone who has studied brain function could say. We know that chimpanzees can learn to express a wide range of ideas with American Sign Language. These animals do not have the first two speech areas in their brains. This would indicate that sign language may bi-pass the Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas in the human brain, making it a marvelous tool for injury to those areas. This would make a great area for further study.

Teaching Children A Second Language – Add American Sign Language To The Mix?

by: Christina Schabow, owner, Portland Early Learning Project – Baby Sign Language & Spanish classes for kids in Portland, OR.

An increasing number of families are realizing the benefits of introducing their children to second (or more) languages from an early age.  In this day in age it is becoming more and more possible to raise children bilingually.  What an incredible gift!

Choosing and sticking with a plan for what is best for your family in regards to how to go about creating a bilingual home life can be quite challenging.  When I bring up signing with a baby/child, a concern I often hear from parents who speak more than one language at home is “Will adding yet another language to the mix (American Sign Language) be too much?  Won’t this be confusing for my child?!”

While this is a very natural way to feel, the answer is NO! In fact, using ASL signs with a child of any age who is learning more than one spoken language actually aids in the acquisition of the second language.  This happens for a couple of reasons:

Signs serve as a visual cue of the new word’s meaning – Signs are often visually representative of the concept they represent.  For example, when you sign BALL and say “pelota”, the sign is a great cue as to the meaning of the word because the sign for BALL actually looks like a ball!  This is true for many signs.
Signs serve as bridges helping children to find commonalities between language – In other words, a child may learn very early on that when you put your hands together (like the sign fore MORE) that means MORE!  When you ask your child in the second language  “Quieres Mas?” the first several times you might get a look from your child like “huh?!”  But if you say “Quieres Mas?” while signing that familiar sign MORE, a lightbulb will go on!!  Instead of “huh?” your child will likely be thinking  “I’m really not sure what mom just said, but I know that sign means MORE and yes, I want MORE!”  Over time as he hears “Quieres Mas?” and simultaneously sees the sign MORE, he will connect meaning to the phrase, increasing understanding and thus use of the new language.

Adding signs to the mix will not confuse your child!  It facilitates the process of understanding and using a new language.  The is not only true for babies but for older children as well!  This is just one of the many benefits of signing with a child!
