People with deaf/mute family often learn sign language, but do people with blind family members learn braille?

I couldn’t decide whether to put this in Languages or Cultures… or is there a better category?

  1. (a) Families of the Deaf do not often learn sign language… it’s a big problem. they SHOULD but often, they do not.

    (b) Braille is a way to write the English language (or any spoken language), it’s an orthographic system. It is not a language. Sign Language is… it’s not based in spoken English (or any other language) as Braille is.

So, to answer your question, I don’t know… but I don’t think it’s as necessary since Braille is NOT a language. Blind people still have access to the language of their families, deaf people do not. You’re comparing apples to oranges.

  2. If I had a blind family member, I mgiht learn Braille so I could write to them… but I think I am the last person left who still writes real (snail mail) letters to people.

  3. The sad thing about braille is that even the blind themselves often don’t get to learn it and that’s a worldwide phenomenon.

I used to work with blind people.

  4. My family hasn’t learned Braille. There’s no reason for them to, they can read regularly, I read braille. Unless they are interested in braille there’s no point in them learning it.
