have decided to either learn to speak spanish fluently or learn American sign language. I can’t do both so I have to choose one. Does anyone know if one is more marketable than the other. My goal from learning one of these languages is to make myself more marketable career wise.

If you are only taking one course for economic reasons, take the Spanish and go to the library for sign
I would say spanish if your doing it for your career. It’s sad but you will make more money knowing Spanish.
Spanish. It is more marketable, because there is a growing number of immigrants (who mostly speak Spanish & not very much English) coming to the U.S. It is way helpful to know!–Besides, hearing impaired people usually ( but not always) have an interpreter/family member or friend who can help them out –not so with the poorer immigrants living in this country. & Spanish is soooooooo much cooler.–good luck!
I guess it will depend on what type of career you intent on going into. Personally I refuse to learn spanish on principal. I am having enough trouble learning Czech.
Learn Espanol Spanish if you are here in the US. Most of the Hispanics who are here will speak Spanish. I’ve seen many job opportunities open for someone who Speaks Espanol Spanish, but very few for ASL interpreters.
Mead 1973 it depends on your career path. Spanish would probably benefit u more because employers r pushing for dual BA or BS degrees and to be bi-lingual.
But I have a friend who choose Sign language because she wanted to teach deaf and blind children. She went to some conference and got into govt job signing for the Fed government by networking. She still signs but is also taking intensive language courses to further her career. It’s amazing how quickly she’s climbed the government ladder of success. She started as a teacher and is now interpreting for high govt officials. So it depends on where ur headed.
As for many Americans looking down on Immigrants… they are far more smarter than we give credit. They have been here long before the media and govt sudden interest. If u deported all the people to the various countries, it wouldn’t be long before ur hard working aliens would litterally shut down most of our economy. Our shelves in grocery stores and department stores will be bare. They grow & pick our crops, build our homes, roads, and buildings. They landscape, clean your homes, raise your children and work in every area of business that they are allowed too. They show up to work and will work 7 days a week, 365 yrs and complain very little.
I’m so sick of hearing the jobs they take away. The truth is the American worker does not work as hard, as expertise nor for the wages they will. And they do adapt, do send $ back to their towns and pay taxes that sit in every county of the country collecting interest in Fed/State coffers as lost/unclaimed tax refunds. They often understand more than u or I think. They learn to change money, order and buy things and they push their children to excell in school. If we had to do what they endure, we just wouldn’t make it.
