I don’t get it what make time change so fast?
In 1700’s Hearing people said deaf people are unable to learn.
In 1800’s Hearing people said deaf people are retarded.
In 1900’s Hearing people said deaf people are dumb because they get confused with ‘Deaf and dumb’ but which mean they can’t hear and speak.
So, I am deaf and I am actually typing to you.
So, my question is about 400 years in history of deaf culture and now then more and more hearing people are interesting in learning Sign Language. My point is now they are not like in old time , why does this has changed so fast from 400 years ago?
And if million people want to learn more about deaf people or want to learn Sign Language, but why are some deaf people have hard time to get a job if they didn’t get a good job?
I don’t get it!
Can anyone of you explain this to me?
Help me to understand this.
Please no nasty talking or smart remark!
Thank you.
Oh, by the way if you feel sorry for me because I am deaf, then that is big turn off.

In the past 100 years we have had an explosive increase in scientific knowledge. At the same time we’ve had travel and information exchange greatly increased. New ideas and norms travel at the speed of the internet across continents now. So attitudes toward deafness and other conditions have also changed more quickly in recent history than ever before. Nevertheless, there are still individuals who are closed minded to what another person is capable of. I have normal hearing and sight, but I’m in the process of learning sign so that I can converse with the deaf husband of a good friend. Right now I do so by writing on a tablet; this would be much faster and easier for both of us!
I guess hearing people are kinda retarded when it comes to anyone that is different, disabled, gay, redheads(?) yay~ progression though. At least things are getting better for everyone whose different. I don’t actually feel sorry for deaf people, they seem smarter than me since they know this whole other language that I don’t o.o makes my hands want to go in my pockets because they must look so stupid LOL. I think everyone is better than me practically. Dunno if that’s a bad or good thing.
A lot of what you are speaking of here… boils down to a perception thing… from the earliest days and that set of perceptions to those that are in play today
Most people that I know have come to understand that there are some extremely talented … even gifted individuals that are deaf… and others that have any number of things that are considered “challenges” that excel…. I personally have a blind friend who serves on a major corporate board of directors… she has three college degrees and has written two books… an absolutely amazing individual !!
When it comes to why these individuals you are talking about can not find good employment… could be for any number of reasons…. it could definitely be a certain prejudice that still remains in the minds of certain employers… but, it also could rest in the shear fact that the general job markets are in terrible shape right now and there are precious few jobs to be had…. or, it could be that these individuals are simply not qualified for the jobs that they are seeking… hard to tell….
Progress IS happening in these areas, however… and, even though there is a great deal more to be done… one can truthfully say that it is nothing like it used to be… and, all of that… is for the better for sure !!
Best to You

I agree with a million percent. people think that because someone is deaf they are stupid also. I understand how you feel. my son has mild c.p and my daughter is mentally handicapped. they are treated different. people don’t know how to act around them. they are never included in anything. my son wanted to get a job real bad and as soon as they find out he is handicapped, they turn away.
I have a 10 year old grandson with autism. Because he doesn’t communicate as freely as others, some think he has not been able to learn at the expected pace of his age.
But that is a far cry from the truth. He understands everything that is being said. And I can tell he uses deductive reasoning.
Time I’m sure will help in how this handicap is perceived by society in general.
In school, he is in a regular classroom with a speech therapist who comes in one class a day. And he gets all A’s.
For those who are Witnesses, he has been able to give a few comments in the meetings. More reading the scriptures than spoken comments though.
