In American Sign Language, does it matter which hand you use to sign?

I am right handed but I found I’ve been using my left hand for signing the alphabet. I was just wondering if there’s a certain hand you suppose to use for certain words or phrases. This is my first time learning sign language so I don’t know much. Any other tips would be nice. .
