I’m trying to learn sign language to past the time. I’m picking up on a few words and sentences that I got from a ASL dictionary, but know one I work with knows sign language, so It’s hard to carry out a conversation and know if I’m going about it correctly. Any ideas?

Most colleges have an ASL course. I worked with Special Ed. kids in a school district and learned through my teachers. I left that job about 5 years ago and have lost most of my signing skills. The fact is that if you don’t use it you’ll definetly lose it when it comes to signing. If you really like it, try a course.
do a search for the nearest school for the deaf
and ask them this question.
They often have support groups for helping the families of their students learn sign.
you might also ask if they know any local person who would be willing to do some free tutoring.

the nearest school still might be able to find someone who could
“chat” with you via web cam
It would be good if you had someone to practice with.
Look in the mirror when you sign and voice the words
(total communication – some people read lips)
Listen to the news or a sermon and try to sign what is being said. You need to get a book that has signs for words or phrases, rather than just finger spelling. Good luck to you, it will be very rewarding learning a new language………plus you will be able to communicate.
Contact any school for the blind and deaf and see if you can come there when you have the time and be tutored and you should become a volunteer. You should be able pick up all you need to know in no time.
take a class, at the local community college and go to the special resource center or join what ever club, or hang out wherever the deaf hang out on campus and befriend the one’s in your class, they will help you out, also buy a couple baby vidoes that teach sign language, my sisters kids, picked up household words after seeing a baby einstein video a few times and those turds are always signing to me and laugh at me like I am some forrest gump idiot ,because I can’t understand them ,I bought one of those damn video’s so I could finally know something they were sayin and stop those heathens from laughin at me
