  1. There is a difference between learning the vocabulary, and actually learning the language. As a hearing person who excelled in English classes, I can tell you that it’s not as “simple” to actually learn ASL (American Sign Language). I had a really hard time separating “English word order”, and ASL which is a language of its own, with its own grammar and syntax. I have been studying on and off for several years and still have much to learn.

    But to really learn sign language, will take you time and study, including study of Deaf culture. Here is a website that can get you started, but I would recommend real-life classes too, if you are really interested in learning the language. It helps greatly to learn from experienced ASL users and be able to put the language into practice by having actual ASL conversations with others.
