I want to learn American Sign Language. But I can’t seem to find any classes in my local area. So whats the next best thing to do to learn? I have a deaf family memeber and a mute friend. so I would like to learn.

i would definitely advise doing it in a class. learning from a book will simply not give you the instruction you need, nor will a DVD. interaction with a qualified teacher is the best way to learn, maybe you could try and find a class thats perhaps not in your area, as you said there were none, but possibly nearby anywhere?

The best way to learn is from Deaf people themselves. Many are very willing to teach hearing people to sign. Your Deaf relative may be able to take you on some Deaf gatherings to introduce you to the Deaf Community in your area.
I have to agree with Tara. The absolute best way to learn sign is to have a deaf person teach you. if you’re weary of that, you could try a community sign language class. Of course, there’s the chance your teacher could be deaf!
Seriously, I would ask your family member to help you. 🙂
