What is the quickest, easiest way to learn basic sign language?

I/we already know the alphabet, but would like to learn at least basic words and phrases, quickly and easily. We have an old, large, hardback book, with words in alphabetical order, but that seems quite time consuming.

  1. volunteer at a school for the deaf. the kids are great and youll pick it up in no time.

  2. If you have an ASL school in your area, I would suggest attending…the classes are usually cheap, once a week, at night. I’m in the Central Texas region, so I attend Austin Sign Language School.

In our area you can get excellent teaching from a deaf teacher for 75.00 a semester.
I would highly suggest learning from a deaf teacher if the option is available.

    Two great ASL browsers –

    …are wonderful ways to start.

To practice receptive skills, the other 1/2 of the struggle, just go to YouTube and search for “ASL” or “deaf”.
Watching deaf Vlogs is one of the best ways to practice as you learn.

There are also some great sign teachers that post lessons on Youtube. One of the best, IMHO, is this girl…

A good book that does not teach signs in alphabetical order, but rather by natural progression, is “A Basic Course in American Sign Language, Second Edition”. Readily available on most book selling sites.

    Good Luck!
