When is a good time to start teaching my child sign language?

My son is almost 7 months old and I intend on teaching my son sign language. My husband and I both had hearing problems and we just want to give him a way to communicate with us if he has the same problems. Any suggestions on teaching and when to begin?

  1. You can start now. Simple one’s like, for more or eat. At the last school i worked at, we taught the infants to do sign language=)

  2. I started teaching my son when he was 7 months and i started with please then more then eat and then drink ..I also taught him how to tell me when he went poopy

  3. Defiantly start now, babies can communicate alot earlier using sign language than they can with the spoken words.

  4. start now (just sign when you speak)

also make sure he doesnt have a hearing problem and get him into a speech therapy program ASAP if either you or your husband have an ipediment

  5. Seven months is a good age to start teaching sign language. Mackaton (this is spelt wrong) run a wonderfull course for babies and use signs the same or similar to British sign language. It will help him to be able to communicate with you long before he would be able to tell you with speech and can release a lot of frustration for them. There is other types of baby signing courses which use a lot of songs, but they are not as good as the above and do not teach as many sign as reinforce the training as well.

My son has a speech delay and signing has made his life so much easier as he has been able to say what he wants or doesn’t want. Also he even make up his own sign to let me know what he wants.

  6. As soon as possible. Children can’t verbalize what they need at that age, but they can sign it. My friend’s baby says thank you, im hungry, no more, and other essential things that babies can’t say with words.

  7. right now… my sister has a two year old and he talks very well and knows about 300 words in sign language. he doesn’t use it as a crutch because he talks very well, too. they watch the signing time videos. my daughter has been over there watching the videos too and is picking them up quickly.

  8. start now. I usually started with drink, or eat. But now that the doc told me to stay away from sign, my daughter still does the sign for more when she wants more of something. It’s amazing to me. They also have a baby einstein video you can watch with your child.

  9. this is the perfect time. he will probably start doing some of the signs right away. my daughter is 10 months and does more, milk, tries to do down, out, cereal and change. it’s fun, you’ll love it!

  10. We started our son on sign language at 5 months old with the Signing Times videos and reinforcing it with him as well. He was signing milk by the time he was 7 months old and is 2 1/2 and still signs.

  11. There is a book of baby signing and you can actually teach them at a very young age. I would start now.
Get the book and it will tell you. As his brain absorbs language, as it is doing now, it will absorb the signs to go along with it.
I would start it as soon as possible.
