Any healthy language will change and grow as the society around it grows. Just so, ASL, which was established 200 years ago, has taken on attributes of the community that has kept it alive.
ASL is not French sign. It is a descendant, an offspring, of French sign, which is why it is not French.
As time goes on it will look less and less French.
I heard that a lot of it is a rehash of the American Indian sign language. I cannot vouch for the veracity in this.
It may have contributed to it but it’s not where it came from. ASL came from America. Combined sign to suit the deaf learning in america. There are different sign languages for different countries. One sign could mean something completly different in another language.
So in china they have their own sign language etc. etc.

I took a class on it and i’ve known how to sign for 10 years because two of my uncles are deaf but I know that when it came to america, it was brought over by the french…but before the french its very possible it was the enligsh. All I know is that the french are the ones who brought it here.
