  1. i learned sign language because of a few reasons
    1) it was the most fun and easy language i have learned (i speak quite a few)
    2) i am deaf in one ear, acquired the hearing loss at 13
    3) i have deaf friends
    4) sometimes its easier to communicate, especially if you and your friends and family know sign language. for example. if you are in a restaurant and you see a cute waiter, you could easily say how attractive he or she is and no one but your group and maybe a few others would know!

  2. I work in a hearing environment (a coffee shop), but there’s a community centre up the street where thousands of deaf people congregate every once in a while. Well, not thousands, but you get the idea.

Since I have to move REALLY fast to get people their coffee, it’s much easier to communicate with them in Sign than to have them write down what they want. If it’s not busy, baristas can chat with customers. If someone (who I know is deaf) is all alone, I’d at least like to be able to chat with them!

When I make the sign for “Deaf?”, the look of shock on their faces is sometimes priceless! A lot of them ask me why I’m learning it, how, where, and so on… all of them are appreciative of my efforts, and I’m only too happy to accommodate customers’ various needs.
