Will teaching my 20 month old who can’t talk sign language slow him down?

He is starting to see a speach path this week. She told me we could start teaching him sign so he can learn to communicate in some way. I was wondering if that would just hinder his talking even more. I’m just not sure what to do with this one, I want him to be able to tell me what he wants, but I also don’t want to slow down the speach process. Thanks guys!

  1. no it won’t slow him down. My daughter is in speech therapy. learning to sign and speak actually really helped her succeed. your child needs to communicate with you and the sign language is a great tool.
the speech therapist really know what they’re doing so don’t worry.

  2. Not at all as long as you do it properly.

Sign language will give your son the opportunity to communicate while he builds up his verbal vocabulary. It is also a very useful tool early on when many of his words may sound alike… he can talk and sign and that will help you understand what he is trying to say.

The important thing to remember is always say the word when you use the sign so that he is also hearing the verbal word and learning to associate the two….
