I’m going to be learning the language tonight. And I did sign up for pen pal international, I did get a kit from the library. But don’t have my own Chinese dictionary. Should I go for a used one?

yes you should.. but i think you might need to know how to read the words if you get an actual chinese-english dictionary..
The main problem with writing letters and using a dictonary is that Chinese has a different flow and structure than English. You cant really just translate words and write them, and expect to learn the language.
Also you will not fully grasp the pronunciation of the words, and the all important tones.
I admire your enthusiasm, but make sure to avoid these pitfalls
